Services
The Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind (HERIB) has been providing a variety of services since 1864.
By listening to people with sight problems, the charity has changed and developed the kinds of services it offers and is still doing so today.
Currently we are in regular contact with over 1850 people by sending a card to them on their birthday and then a copy of our Insight newsletter at other times during the year. We regularly visit between 400 and 500 people each month and provide 1000 day centre places. Staff are on hand at Beverley Road, Hull to show visitors round the resource centre or to arrange a visit from the Resource Bus Service. The Resource Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is available.
Each year we send out a survey to everyone to ask how we are doing and we do take notice of your comments. One of the things that was mentioned was the lack of information following diagnosis and registration. Where to go next? The agreement between HERIB and Hull City Council has allowed us to provide a Support Worker in the Eye Department to give out information and offer help.
If this is your first contact with HERIB or if you remember us from many years ago, please come in and have a look round, we think you will be very pleasantly surprised.
All the staff at HERIB have received training in Visual Impairment Awareness as well as other training relevant to their jobs. Many of the staff have worked for HERIB for several years and all have an understanding of sight loss. They will make you feel welcome.
Children’s Events
At HERIB we do our best to support visually impaired children and their families. We offer support and advice we then signpost them to other organizations that can help. We arrange a child’s outing each year during the summer and a free pantomime trip to Hull New Theatre with a touch tour before the performance to meet the cast and explore the wonderful costumes which creates a magical adventure for the children. For more details contact HERIB on 01482 342297.
